9/18 β-carbolines & MAOI

The following text is a work of satirical fictitious creative writing and should not be misconstrued as advice of any sort.
β-carbolines are a class of Indole Alkaloids. In the brain, DMT is cyclized into the β-carboline Harman.
Many β-carbolines are MonoAmine Oxidase Inhibitors, they Inhibit the Monoamine Oxidase Enzyme which degrades monoamines such as dopamine or serotonin (5-hydroxy-tryptamine.
The "harmala" alkaloids were among the first β-carbolines isolated, from the seeds of Middle-Eastern desert shrub Peganum harmala
The alkaloids are potent MAO inhibitor drugs, and yet widely used by people of the Muslim faith, which usually prohibits drug use.
Ibogaine is chemically similar in appearance to the β-carbolines. It used by the Bwiti religion of Gabon in a several days long rebirth ceremony some call the "Ghost Dance".
One dose of Ibogaine reduces Opiod cravings for up to 6 months. This therapeutic power coupled with fear that this African plant would unify civil rights movements are why was and is so heavily criminalized.
It should be mentioned that Ibogaine may induce seizures or cardiac arrest. Ibogaine clinics exist for people to recieve treatment under guidance of medical professionals.
Tabernanthe iboga "Iboga"
Produces elevated levels of Ibogaine in the roots.
West African plant predominantly in Gabon that assisted in forming the syncretic Christian Bwiti religion.
People experience several days of vivid hallucinations often marked with interactions with ancestors called te "Ghost Dance".
Used by Shamans in the region of Siberia. These medicine people are whom the term shaman has been adopted from and genericized.
Nomadic siberians may have followed migrating reindeer and consumed the snowy urine of reindeer who had consumed Amanita muscaria.
This is because the reindeer kidneys convert ibotenic acid into muscimol without toxic effects to the reindeer.
Thus perhaps the story of the Red and White Santa Claus and his Reindeer in the North Pole is born...
Peganum harmala, "Esfand / Harmel"
Produces β-carbolines containing seeds. Many of the compounds inhibit the MonoAmine Oxidase enzyme.
Drought-resistant desert plant has spread across the world, with some countries considering it a "Noxious Weed".
This status in California means the seeds can not be legally sold, but they are of deep religion to some adherents of the Muslim faith.
In Iran during the Nourouz new year ceremonies, seeds are thrown into firepits to waft the β-carboline MAOI smoke into the air.
In Pakistan, fathers may swallow up to 10 grams of seeds after dinner to aid in digestion.
Despite this, caution should be taken with these seeds. They prevent your body from destroying waste products.
You could easily unbalance your neurochemistry and feel quite sick and uncomfortable.
Used as an alternative to the endangered ayahuasca vine. Popular for "X-huascas."
While the predominantly harmine-containing ayahuasca vine inhibits psilocin, DMT, or LSD degredation, Peganum harmala's alkaloids appear to also prolong and empower THC, Salvinorin A, and Muscimol.
About 3 grams, or one teaspoon, taken one hour before another drug inhibits the body's chemical degradation process.
Thus, people feel subjectively stronger effects that last for a significantly longer amount of time.
Nymphaea caerulea , "Egyptian Blue Lotus"
Known to the Ancient Egyptians.l
Passiflora incarnata , "Passion Flower"
This South American species also produces Ibogaine but does not have evidence of historical usage.
This would be a fantastic open area of research.
Tabernaemontana , "s"
This South American species also produces Ibogaine but does not have evidence of historical usage.
This would be a fantastic open area of research.
Peganum harmala Germination Procedure
Place a paper towel in a plastic bag.
Moisten the towel, do not allow water to accumulate in bag.
Place Peganum harmalaseeds on paper towel.
After root radicle is 2 inches long, place in well draining soil.
Peganum harmala Citric Acid Extraction
Full instructions in lab manual.
Peganum harmala
Smell isolated terpene compounds used for perfumes/cosmetics.
Smell different terpenes present in common herbs and foods.
Demonstrate terpene volatility by crushing plant material.
Use worksheet to match unknown plant samples with terpene chemical names.
Build connections between chemical names and terpene scents to identify several classwide mystery samples.
Citrus Terpene Procedure
Scratch and smell the surfaces of several citrus fruits.
Smell lemon verbena and Lemon Balm.
Smell isolated limonene, limene, and citronelol.
Identify if the samples are higher in limonene, limene, or citronelol.
In Dr. Shulgin's Nature of Drugs lectures here at San Francisco State University, he reports that THC can be easily synthesized using an orange peel and a common tree lichen.
Tree Procedure
Collect samples of eucalyptus and pine needles from trees outside classroom.
Volatalize terpenes.
Forest fire demonstration.
